Into the Wild #4

1.

I was shocked when Chris got a job at McDonalds because part of the point of him going into the wild was to be on his own and to depend on his own; to be one at one with nature. Then you find out he is going to work at McDonalds and he is contradicting himself. He made a huge deal about being alone and not needing to depend on anyone or anything, for example, money. He burned and donated all of his because he did not what to rely on it. However, he is getting a job because he now needs money?                      Also, I believe part of Chris wanted to form back into society, and that is why he would want to get a job at such a consumer-based restaurant. It was a flawless plan to observe how people act and how he could get back into the flow of society.  Nevertheless, Chris still does not like to be with civilization and ends up quitting after a while.  A possible trigger that could make him want to reform to society could be the simple fact that he missed people, or was simply looking for a job with good pay so he could hitch a ride up to his new place to live on the road.
As for his colleagues, they did not quite understand him.  Yet, they took pity on him because they thought that he was homeless and needed help. His colleagues thought of him below them, they made him a charity case; offering him soaps and socks. They had to tell him to bath more too because he smelled bad which did not help the fact that he was homeless. Also, I feel as though when they were offering Chris a rides home, they were taunting him a little because he does not have a home. However, Chris takes it with a grain of salt because he is living the way he pleases to life. It also did not help that Chris never particularly associated himself with his colleagues as much as he should have.
If I was working at McDonalds with Chris, I would not very associate myself with him. Not that I would not like or be interested in his stories, but because I would want to help him get back on his feet, and in a home. However, I know that would just make him angry. Therefore, I feel it would be more beneficial to not associate myself with Chris.  As for his diverse thoughts and actions, I feel I might be a little taken back because he has an amazing schooling education, yet lives in the streets. If I heard his while story, and about the money, I would be angered with him, because I would not understand because I have different views than he.

Jan Burres and Chris are very similar, which is why I believe they get along so well. Jan is a middle-aged rubber tramp who meets McCandless when she picks him up hitchhiking. They become close, and he stays in written contact with her until going into the Alaskan wilderness. I feel as though she became a motherly like figure in Chris’ new life, the life on the road.  This is a big deal for Chris to write to someone because he barley writes and never writes to his real family. I feel as though they get along with each other easily because they understand each other and the Burres feel as though Chris is like their child.

I feel as though Ronald looked upon Chris as his family and Chris to him as a father figure in his new life. Ronald was really moved by just Chris being in his presence, I feel as though Chris filled Ronald’s heart with joy. Ronald lived alone and when Chris was with him the while in his heart was filled, the loneliness was no more.

  1. i agree with what you said his trigger could have been. i think just being cut off from society completely may have made him lonely, and he missed the real world

  2. I agree taking a job at McDonald's seemed weird. What was the point of burning all his money and leaving society, then coming to work again? Maybe he was just confused and wanted to have the best of both worlds.

  3. I never really thought the way you did. I like your thinking and your perspective on things. I agree with everything, I almost said some of the exact same things.
